EVs and hybrids are coming to your hoist whether you are ready or not

New electric and hybrid sales keep climbing in Australia, and the used ones are now old enough to be out of dealer servicing. That second part is the bit that matters for independents. The first wave of out-of-warranty hybrids and EVs is looking for a workshop, and most of their owners would rather not pay dealer rates.

The honest starting point

High voltage systems are not something to learn by having a go. The sensible path for a small shop is depowering and safety training first, so your techs can legally and safely work around the orange cables, even if the actual battery work goes elsewhere. From there, most of an EV is still a car. Brakes, suspension, steering, tyres, cooling and cabin work are all bread and butter.

Where the money actually is right now

  • Hybrid servicing. There are far more hybrids than pure EVs on Australian roads, and they still need oil, coolant and brakes.
  • Tyres and suspension. EVs are heavy and hard on both.
  • Brake servicing. Regen braking means rotors rust before they wear, which is its own job.
  • Health checks and pre-purchase inspections on used EVs, where buyers are nervous and evidence sells.

Do the training, put the signage up, and document everything you do with photos. Being the local shop that can show its work on an unfamiliar drivetrain is exactly how you win a nervous EV owner for life.
