Photos win arguments: why evidence is the cheapest marketing a workshop can do

Every mechanic has had the phone call. The customer picks the car up, drives it for a week, something else starts rattling, and suddenly the last invoice is under the microscope. Did you really replace that part? Was the brake wear actually that bad? You know the answer. They cannot see it.

Under Australian Consumer Law, repairs come with consumer guarantees, and customers are well within their rights to ask questions. The workshops that handle this best are not the ones with the smoothest talkers at the front counter. They are the ones with photos.

What a photo actually does

A photo of a worn rotor next to the new one does three jobs at once. It proves the work happened, it justifies the price, and it teaches the customer something about their own car. That last one matters more than most people think. A customer who understands why the job was needed does not shop the next quote around.

Make it a habit, not a project

  • Photograph the fault before you touch it, from far enough back that the car is recognisable.
  • Photograph the old part next to the new one, on the bench, every time.
  • Say what you found in your own words while it is fresh. Thirty seconds is plenty.
  • Send it to the customer the same day, attached to a record they can keep.

None of this is extra work if it happens at the hoist while your hands are already dirty. It only becomes a chore if it waits for the office at five o'clock. Build it into the job, and the disputes, the chasing and the awkward calls quietly disappear.
